Approximate physical location

Why IP geolocation gets it wrong — real causes

Mobile CGNAT pools

Mobile carriers route thousands of subscribers through a small shared pool of public IPs using Carrier-Grade NAT, and geolocation databases map that pool to the carrier's regional gateway rather than any individual subscriber. This is the single most common reason a mobile user's geolocation result lands in the wrong city — sometimes the correct state or province, but rarely the correct town.

The "Null Island" fallback bug

When a geolocation database can't confidently resolve coordinates for an address block, some implementations default to 0° latitude, 0° longitude — a point in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of West Africa, nicknamed "Null Island" by the mapping community. If a lookup ever pins an IP there, it's a strong sign of a database gap rather than an actual location.

Database staleness after IP block reassignment

Regional registries periodically reassign IP blocks between ISPs and regions as networks grow and consolidate, but commercial geolocation databases update on their own schedules — sometimes weeks or months behind. An address that genuinely moved regions can keep showing its old city until the provider's next data refresh catches up.

IPv6 databases are younger and thinner

IPv4 geolocation data has had roughly three decades of accumulated corrections and real-world validation.
